Introduction

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), Observed on August 31,  is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose. This global event is dedicated to raising awareness about drug overdoses, remembering without stigma those who have died while acknowledging the grief of family and friends left behind. This day also serves to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorders (SUDs) and drug-related deaths.

The theme for 2024 is “Together we can”, highlighting the power of our community when we all stand together. As a leader in digital health and dedicated substance use management, Pelago is uniquely positioned to contribute to overdose prevention efforts. We’re committed to addressing these challenges by developing and providing innovative, evidence-based virtual care solutions to businesses and organizations throughout the U.S., and partnering with organizations such as the national nonprofit Shatterproof.

By helping employers address gaps in substance use care and focusing on providing long-term prevention and recovery, Pelago provides personalized care plans that address the unique needs of its members. This approach aligns with the objectives of International Overdose Awareness Day, which emphasizes the need for comprehensive and compassionate care.

Client Advisory Board (CAB) Insights

Recent feedback from Pelago’s Customer Advisory Board (CAB) Summit highlighted key areas of customer collaboration and increased focus as we work to break the stigma of SUDs and address opportunities for more complete SUD care. A significant concern raised and discussed was the gap in care for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. This concern was raised in the drop of new data showing that nationally, 48.5 million (17.1%) of U.S. individuals 12 and over—had an SUD in 2023. In the U.S. workforce specifically, our recent national survey showed that 4 out of 10 workers misuse substances, and government research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) shows 97% of employees who need substance care are not getting it.

Clearly, many people are not receiving the necessary substance use support they need, leaving significant gaps in care. Pelago is working to address this challenge through recent initiatives and our dedicated virtual care platform—a platform that delivers nationwide, 50-state coverage for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and full-spectrum care from prevention to high-acuity.

Recent Initiatives

Pelago is closing gaps in care through multiple innovative initiatives, including:

  1. State of Substance Use Management Report: Our 2024 report emphasizes the urgent need for employer support in managing substance use, highlighting the personal and professional toll it takes on the workforce. The report advocates for recovery-ready workplaces that reduce stigma and provide essential support and recovery resources.
  2. Opioid Use Disorder Study: A recent feasibility study published by Pelago demonstrates the effectiveness of combining medication with cognitive behavioral therapy for treating opioid use disorder. The study highlights significant improvements in abstinence rates and overall well-being, showcasing the potential of digital therapeutics in overcoming barriers to care and closing gaps in care.
  3. Centers of Excellence Network: We established a Centers of Excellence network to improve inpatient treatment completion rates through an integrated care SUD program that includes inpatient treatment and guidance. This initiative partners with leading inpatient treatment centers to offer high-quality, accredited care for SUDs, ensuring a seamless continuum of care from digital to inpatient settings.
  4. Cannabis Use Disorder Treatment Program: Our company launched the first nationwide digital cannabis use treatment program to address the rising rate of cannabis use disorders. This program provides specialized, evidence-based treatment and support, filling a critical gap as cannabis use rises while treatment rates decline.
  5. Contingency Management Program: Earlier this year, we introduced a contingency management program, becoming the first nationwide digital provider to offer this evidence-based treatment approach. The program rewards positive behaviors—such as engaging in treatment and abstaining from substance use—with incentives. This approach is designed to improve member engagement and health outcomes by reinforcing behaviors that contribute to recovery.
