National Survey finds U.S. Employers and Workers Primed for Honest Dialogue About Drug and Alcohol Use Amid Substance Use Crisis
Pelago’s 2nd Annual State of Substance Use Management report reveals personal toll of substance use and urgent need for recovery-ready workplaces
(NEW YORK – August 8, 2024) — Pelago, the leading digital clinic partner to U.S. businesses and health plans for substance use management, today released its 2024 Pelago Annual State of Substance Use Management Trend Report. The report, based on a national survey of 1,210 U.S. workers, underscores the urgent need for employer support in managing substance use and highlights the significant personal and professional toll it takes on the workforce.
Aligned with federal workplace efforts as well as CDC research that recommends employers develop workplace-supported prevention, treatment, and recovery programs, Pelago survey results support the development of a corporate-led, recovery-ready workplace effort. This effort includes measures to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorders (SUDs), provide evidence-based substance use management programs, and ensure private, confidential access to SUD treatment and support. Such an approach can foster improved healthcare outcomes while reducing the economic impact of workplace addiction.
“Substance use is a pervasive issue that affects a significant portion of the workforce, yet the stigma and lack of support prevent many from seeking the help they need,” said Yusuf Sherwani, M.D., CEO and co-founder of Pelago. “Employers have a unique opportunity to create and foster recovery-ready workplaces that reduce stigma and provide essential support and recovery resources.”
Key Findings from the Pelago 2024 report include:
- Support Gap: Although more than half of workers surveyed believe employer support for substance and alcohol issues is crucial, only 14% report having access to such a benefit.
- Substance Use Prevalence: 35% of American workers (60 million) report personal or family problems involving substance or alcohol use, with 38% of those reporting mental health-related absences.
- Impact on Productivity: 42% of employees have missed work due to personal or family substance use issues.
- Vulnerable Demographics: Women, younger workers, and LGBTQ+ employees are at higher risk for substance use and mental health challenges.
- Stigma: more than half of employees (54%) aren’t comfortable asking for help, thwarted by shame or humiliation.
The findings of the 2024 Pelago report highlight the critical need for employers to take proactive steps in supporting their workforce. By fostering recovery-ready workplaces, employers can positively impact productivity, improve employee well-being, and reduce the significant economic impact of substance use.
